Word For My Igbo Brothers, by Maduka Fidorocks Onwukeme

You voted against GMB for 2 reasons “Hatred for
northerners over the civil war that ended 45 years ago” and
“fears of Islamisation due to ignorance or outright refusal to
see the impossibility of such”.
Well it takes just Kano and Katsina (2 Northern states) to
cancel out all the votes in the Southeast. GMB is coasting
home to victory in the Southwest and the North.
He would definitely win on the votes of other zones
comfortably without the southeast.
The moral of this treatise is that I want to thank my Igbo
brothers for teaching me that a man who is ruled by
“hatred” and “fear” will never move forward. He will only
embark on self defeating schemes even when only defeat
stares him the face.
Anyway, now GMB is set to clinch the presidential seat.
What do you do with the delusions of Islamisation and the
civil war hatred!
As for me, the civil war ended 45 years ago. Am neither
ruled by hate or fear.

turnout.

member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Yomi Ademola,
aka Hunger, was killed by some political thugs at Idi-Oro area
of the town.
Candidate of the PDP for Ifelodun, Boripe and Odo-otin Federal
Constituency, Mr Kayode Oduoye while confirmed the incident
lamented the death of Yomi who defected to PDP from All
Progressive Congress recently.
He said the matter was reported to the police and that three
persons have been arrested over the killing.
The Commissioner of Police in Charge of election in Osun state,
Sam Okaula confirmed the incident.
Similarly, Personal Assistant to a member of Osun State House
of Assembly, Folorunso Bamisayemi representing Ife South
State constituency, simply identified as Dauda was shot dead by
yet to be identified persons.

a former member of Osun State House of Assembly who is a

hoodlums. His vehicles were also destroyed.

voters started early as electoral officials and materials and the
voting took place peacefully.
Osun state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola commended the
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC for the
successful conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly
elections.
The governor disclosed this after casting his vote at the Ifofin
unit 04, Ward 08 in Ilesha East Local Government of Osun.
According to him, the on-going 2015 general election in the
state is far better than what was witnessed in the August 9th
governorship election in the state in 2014.
He also commended the security arrangement, which he
described as being civil in contrast with what the people of the
state experienced in the last August poll in the state.

organization and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-
Kayode, in his remarks, adjudged the election process as being
on course.

of the poll.

Adesiyan, said the poll was peaceful in his area. He said INEC
officials and security agencies discharged their duties well.

electioneering process as a round peg in a round hole.
Adeyeye who is seeking a re-election to the Senate on the
platform of APC said card reader worked well for accreditation
than manual process.

Drama as OAU students stone President Jonathan, Ekiti Obas & Gov. Fayose & chased them out of lle-Ife

In what seems a wild reaction to the polity ailed with
hopelessness and frustration, the students of the Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Friday last week, took their
anger to the Oduduwa a Hall of the university where they
unleashed a dose of despondency on President Goodluck
Jonathan.
A group calling themselves Concerned Yoruba Leaders, within
PDP in the South West, had planned a one-day conference to
drum support for President Jonathan’s second term. Venue was
the Oduduwa Hall.
As the President arrived for the programme, the students, who
had planned very well to unleash their anger against Jonathan,
had laid siege to the premises of the hall. As he alighted from
his vehicle, hail of stones greeted the President.
The authorities of the school calmed down the restive students
temporarily to “cool their temper” until Governor Ayo Fayose of
Ekiti State arrived the campus followed by two 52-seater Ashok
Leyland school buses loaded with Ekiti Obas.
Fayose was so confident that the students would receive him
with open hands. But as he arrived the campus with a horde of
his boys in another bus shouting “oshoko oshoko”, the enraged
students of Ife in large numbers rushed towards his entourage
and dealt a vicious assault on them.
He was lucky to run for his life, as his security aides shielded
and ferried him to the hall. But the Obas, some of whom had
already disembarked from the buses, were not so lucky, as the
students descended on them. Instantly, one of the buses made
a detour and immediately took some of the Obas out of Ile-Ife,
but Oba Adamo Babalola of Itaji Ekiti and Alara of Aramoko Ekiti
were not lucky, as the vehicle with which they came drove off
in a high speed, leaving the duo behind.
One of the Obas quickly removed his beads and gave his horse
tail to his security guard to disguise his identity, and Dipo
Anisulowo came to the rescue of one of the Obas, as he helped
to carry his crown inside a nylon bag back to Ekiti State.
Eventually, one of the stranded Obas was later seen in the town
by the road side trying to catch Ado Ekiti-bound bus.
However, the students that had earlier mellowed down,
regrouped and waited for the President for Part 2 of anti-
Jonathan drama. Within minutes, the students had taken over
the long stretch of road leading to the town from their campus.,
and the programme was abruptly brought to a close as
Jonathan and his handlers hurried into waiting helicopters that
ferried Jonathan, Fayose and other leaders and supporters out
of the campus amid shouts of “ole ole ole”
OAU Ile-Ife students today displayed what they are noted for: to
humiliate corrupt and inept leaders who are making life
uncomfortable for them and who care less about what future
holds for young Nigerians.

Disqualification of Buhari from election portends great danger – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned against any
orchestrated, last-minute disqualification of its presidential
candidate, Gen. Muhammadu, in order to pave the way for an
easy
victory for President Goodluck Jonathan or even another
postponement of the elections
”If it is true, as it is being widely speculated across the country,
that the Jonathan Administration has procured a judgement to
disqualify the APC Presidential Candidate on Wednesday, when
the Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to rule on the
issue, then itportends a great danger for our country,” the party
warned in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
It said, in addition to other reasons, the six-week
postponement of the elections may have been used by those
who never wanted the polls to hold in the first instance to shop
for such a satanic judgement.
”Anyone who will disqualify a presidential candidate on the eve
of an election can only have one and only one purpose for that:
to trigger chaos and pandemonium across the country. Perhaps
this is the reason for the deployment of troops across the
country to crack down on possible protests and create
confusion
”Then, those who orchestrated the disqualification will simply
use what they expect to be angry reactions nationwide as aan
excuse to postpone the elections again, thus triggering a
constitutional crisis, the end of which no one can predict.
”This is why we are hoping that good reason will prevail and
nothing will be done, deliberately, to plunge Nigeria into crisis
by the same people who have always been quick to say their
political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” APC
said.

Obasanjo reacts to military takeover rumour before Saturday’s election

With just four days to the nation’s Presidential
election, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on
Tuesday expressed concern over speculations of
likely handing over of power to the military by
President Goodluck Jonathan.
The former President said this in his Abeokuta
home, when wife of the Presidential candidate of
the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hajia Aisha
Bubari, and the Southwest women leaders and
spouses APC governors visited him.
Obasanjo noted that aside the fact that military
rule is no longer fashionable as it is
unconstitutional, the Intentional community, he
added, would also not condone it, particularly
African Union (AU) where it has been agreed that
any government brought about not on the basis of
the constitution should not stand.
According to him, a military coup anywhere on
African soil would neither be accepted nor
tolerated by the AU member countries until such
government is “dismantled.”
He warned that the whole world is watching
Nigeria in respect of the forthcoming general
elections, saying as the largest country in Africa,
Nigeria should be a model to others and also set
good examples for the continent.
The former President urged Nigeria not to draw the
rest of African countries backward, lamenting the
campaign of hate and division being engaged by
those seeking elective offices.
He also charged women to take active part in the
redemptive mission for Nigeria, adding; “I am
happy to hear directly from you, Mrs. Buhari that
the campaign so far has gone very well. May be I
should say one or two things about the campaign-
I do hope that this week’s elections, and the one
coming in a couple of weeks after that, should
provide the right lessons to learn from.
“Unfortunately, issues that should have been the
main item of our campaign were not discussed. We
have serious issues of security, economy,
unemployment, youth unemployment infrastructure
etc. These are issues among others that I believe
campaign of those who are interested in the
present and the future of this country should be
directed at.
“How are we going to get them, what are we going
to do, not trivial issues of certificate, no certificate,
not trivial issues of when somebody is talking
about someone and whether one is a Nigerian and
not.
“This is what they had in Cote d’Ivore that led
them into almost a very serious problem, not issue
of religion, tribe, not issue of section but issues of
unity of this country and the hate campaign that
we have embarked upon now, I hope this will be
the last time in the history of this country that we
will have this type of campaign of hatred or
division.
“I think the emphasis should be on what unite us,
not what divide us and when I look at the faces of
you ladies here, it is very difficult for me to know.
I think we should emphasise on things that unite
us, we should talk more on what will make this
country not a just country but a great country.
“And that is the challenge before Nigerians today
and particularly before those who are aspiring
either at the state level or at the national level,
how can this country be made great country, God
has given us all we need.
“And I want to thank you because you women you
have a role to play, and I mean that, when things
are going wrong, if women don’t act, things will
continue to go wrong because you have ability to
act, the men who invariably make things to go
wrong are your fathers, your husbands, your sons,
you sons-in-laws.
“With your husbands, you can have pillow talk but
when things are going wrong and you do not talk
or act, you will also be the greatest victim at the
end of the day because it will have effect on your
children and would have a direct effect on you and
all of us.
“I do hope we will get things right. A lot of
rumours are flying around, I think we have gone
away from the rumour of Interim Government
because that is not in our constitution, I hope we
will soon go away from the rumour of handing over
to the military because the military is not meant to
run affairs of a nation in terms of running
government.
“And the Intentional community will not condone
it, particularly African Union where we have a
situation, we have said and it is part and parcel of
the constituting act of the African Union, any
government that is brought about not on the basis
of the constitution will not be accepted and
tolerated and will not be a member of the AU until
that government is dismantled.
“We have the goodwill of many people, I watched,
last night, President Obama talking about our
constitution, I watched out brother from Ghana the
current Chairman of ECOWAS talked about our
constitution, they are all interested, they all wish
us well, should we wish ourselves anything less?”
Earlier, Mrs. Buhari lauded the former President for
being a true nationalist, adding that Obasanjo often
traversed party lines and primordial sentiments
while addressing issues affecting the country.
She said, “Baba exercises his prowess as a father,
as a former head of state of Nigeria twice, very few
Nigerias have the opportunity to rule the country
twice, we are here today to show our appreciation
the way you handle things as a statesman and a
nationalist.”

Obasanjo uncovers plot to hand over to military

…condemns attacks on Buhari over certificate

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,
Tuesday, disclosed that he has uncovered another plot by the
Presidency to handover to the Nigerian military if it loses the
coming Presidential election.
Obasanjo said this alleged plot would undermine the integrity
of Nigeria among the comity of nations.
The former President stated this yesterday while playing host
to the South West women of the All Progressives Congress led
by the wife of the party’s presidential candidate, General
Muhammadu Buhari, Hajia Aisha Buhari.
Obasanjo had recently warned against introduction of Interim
National Government by the Presidency which he said could
plunge the country into chaos like the former President of Cote
d’l voire , Laurent Gbagbo who refused to hand over after he
lost the election did.
The former President said, he was happy that Nigeria has gone
beyond the rumour of Interim National Government, saying
that, he hopes the country will also survive the rumour of
handing over to the military.
He explained that the intentional community especially the
African Union would not accommodate or recognise any
government that emerges without the constitution of the
country.

Newly commissioned N2.5b Kano bridge by Jonathan cracks

VANGUARD – There was anxiety among residents
and motorists over alleged cracks on the N2.5b
Kundila flyover commissioned by President
Goodluck Jonathan Saturday, last Week,in Kano.
Motorists were prevented from using the 2.4m
bridge, Tuesday afternoon.
The alleged cracks on the flyover triggered
celebration among thousands of youths who
chorused in unison that the federal government
project was a ruse.
When contacted the Managing Director, Rocad
Construction company, that handled the project,
Roger Farajallah told Vanguard on phone that “the
bridge is intact and we are installing a speed
breaker at the moment”.
However, armed police have been deployed to the
scene to control traffic.

8 Osun monarchs dissociate from Jonathan’s ‘endorsement deal’ by Ooni

Some leading traditional rulers in Osun State
Tuesday dissociated themselves from the
endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan as a
preferred candidate for the Saturday presidential
election.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade had endorsed
Jonathan in his palace and directed some other
traditional rulers in Osun to point their beaded
walking sticks on Jonathan to pray for the
President’s success in the election.
In a communiqué signed by the traditional rulers
after their meeting at the palace of Akirun of Ikirun,
the monarchs faulted their colleagues in the state
who endorsed Jonathan at Ife.
The monarchs who attended the meeting and
signed the communiqué include
Oba Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi, the Aragbiji of
Iragbiji, Oba Abioye Oyebode Oluronke, the
Olukuku of Okuku, Oba Joseph Oladunjoye Fasikun,
the Olunisa of Inisa, Oba Olayiwola Olawale

Oyan, Oba Isaac Adetoyi
Adetunlurese, the Onirun of Oke-Irun, Oba Yusuf
Omoloye Oyagbodun, the Elerin of Erin Osun and
Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, the Timi of Ede.
The monarch said the endorsement of President
Jonathan in Ife was
generating ripple among their subjects who
thought that the entire traditional ruler in the state
partook in the endorsement of the president.
The monarchs lamented that they were
embarrassed when some of their subjects
demanded for their own share from the hard
currency allegedly doled out by the president at
Ife.
According to the communiqué, “the general
impression is that all traditional rulers in Osun
State, without exception, were involved.
Consequently, our subjects have been accusing us,
demanding our explanation for engaging in such
an act. Some of them (our subjects) have also
demanded for their own share of the money we
collected”.
It continued “No doubt, this is an embarrassing
situation to us. For this reason, we have decided
to make it clear to the public that not all
traditional rulers in Osun were involved in the act”.
The monarchs said good governance that would
bring better life to their people is their main
concern and called on their subjects to
discountenance their issue of money and vote
according to their conscience.

Obama writes Nigerians over elections, urges peace

As preparations intensify for general
elections in Nigeria, starting Saturday, the
United States President, Barack Obama, on
Monday sent a special message to Nigerians,
urging a credible and peaceful polls.
In the message sent directly to Nigerians,
President Obama reminded the people about
their struggle for the country’s
independence from colonialism, the struggle
against military dictatorship and the need to
turn the country’s diversity into a source of
strength.
“I call on all Nigerians to peacefully express
your views and to reject the voices of those
who call for violence,” Mr. Obama said.
“And when elections are free and fair, it is
the responsibility of all citizens to help keep
the peace, no matter who wins,” he added.
Read full text of Mr. Obama’s Message to
the Nigerian People below:
“Hello. Today, I want to speak directly to
you—the people of Nigeria.
Nigeria is a great nation and you can be
proud of the progress you’ve made.
Together, you won your independence,
emerged from military rule, and
strengthened democratic institutions.
You’ve strived to overcome division and to
turn Nigeria’s diversity into a source of
strength. You’ve worked hard to improve
the lives of your families and to build the
largest economy in Africa.
Now you have a historic opportunity to help
write the next chapter of Nigeria’s progress
—by voting in the upcoming elections. For
elections to be credible, they must be free,
fair and peaceful. All Nigerians must be able
to cast their votes without intimidation or
fear.
So I call on all leaders and candidates to
make it clear to their supporters that
violence has no place in democratic
elections—and that they will not incite, support or engage
in any kind of violence—before, during, or after the votes
are counted. I call on all Nigerians to peacefully express
your views and to reject the voices of those who call for
violence. And when elections are free and fair, it is the
responsibility of all citizens to help keep the peace, no
matter who wins.
Successful elections and democratic progress will help
Nigeria meet the urgent challenges you face today. Boko
Haram—a brutal terrorist group that kills innocent men,
women and children—must be stopped. Hundreds of
kidnapped children deserve to be returned to their
families.  Nigerians who have been forced to flee deserve to
return to their homes. Boko Haram wants to destroy
Nigeria and all that you have worked to build. By casting
your ballot, you can help secure your nation’s progress.
I’m told that there is a saying in your country: “to keep
Nigeria one is a task that must be done”. Today, I urge all
Nigerians—from all religions, all ethnic groups, and all
regions—to come together and keep Nigeria one. And in
this task of advancing the security, prosperity, and human
rights of all Nigerians, you will continue to have a friend
and partner in the United States of America.

Irate mob attacks Jonathan Campaign coordinator in Jigawa

The
Coordinator of GoodLuck/Sambo Campaign
Organization in Jigawa, AlhajiYusuf Alasan
escaped being lynched when he was attacked by youths who participated in the campaign held in Dutse, the Jigawa state
capital, Weekend. Youths drawn from the 27 LGA’s of the state
attended the Transformation Agenda of Nigeria (TAN)
sponsored campaign for President Jonathan’s re-election.
Drama started shortly after the event when the youths
demanded for their fees, but to their surprise, the coordinator
asked them to drop their phone numbers as he promised
payment will be made in due course and they should expect
bank transaction alert.
This drew the ire of the youths who accused the campaign
coordinator, who also doubles as the SURE-P boss in Jigawa
State of diverting their mobilisation money running into millions
of Naira, describing his action as betrayal and breach of trust.
The situation later degenerated when the youths pounced on
Alhaji Alasan and his team, as people scampered to safety,
some removing their TAN branded T-shirts and Face caps.
All effort to contact the Jonathan campaign Coordinator proved
abortive as his telephone rang several times without him taking
his calls.
But one of aides, Aminu Aminu confirmed that irate mob
attacked the organisers of the rally.

Hear what Furtyle, whose real names are Kenardo André
Robinson said about the implants;
“It’s really the process where the implants are implanted in
the skull. I was sedated during the surgery but had to be
given lots of painkillers when I revived because it was very
painful,” he said.
On people thinking he is demonic, Furtyle said; “There are
some who think that I am demonic, but it doesn’t bother
me much as I am not the first artiste who is picked on.
There are others who have done far less than I have done

Stay To Protect Your Votes after voting – Ahmadu Alli Tells PDP Supporters

Speaking also, Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed said:
“Jonathan’s government is sincere. When Jonathan came on
board, he came with an agenda and not propaganda. I am not
surprised that ALGON could find Mr. President worthy enough
of endorsing. It was Mr. President that insisted that allocations
meant for local governments get to them directly. That is the
kind of leader we need. Jonathan has intervened in all the
sectors of the economy. The only way to appreciate him is to
vote for him.
ABUJA—FORMER National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, Senator Ahmadu Alli, yesterday, tow the line of the
Opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, by directing PDP
faithful to remain at the polling booths after casting their votes
in the forth coming elections
This was, however, contrary to a recent order handed down by
the Inspector-General of Police,IGP, Mr. Suleiman Abba,
directing Nigerians not to stay back at the polling units after
casting their votes.
Alli, who is the Director-General of the Peoples Democratic
Party Campaign Organisation, spoke in Abuja, at the occasion of
formal endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan for re-
election by Mr. Micah Jiba-led Association of Local Government
of Nigeria, ALGON.
The PDP chieftain said his advice was predicated on feelers at
the party’s disposal that the opposition party, the APC, was
planning to rig the elections.
He insisted that supporters of the PDP must stay back at the
various polling units after casting their votes in order to guide
against alleged plans by the leading opposition party to rig the
polls.
Senator Alli, however, cautioned his party loyalists to resist any
attempt to be pushed to cause mayhem.
Alli also urged voters not to make mistake of voting General
Buhari in the election, saying the present Nigeria was in search
of young vibrant people to lead it and not people he refered to
as “analog.”
He said in an era where global leaders less than 60 years of
age, Nigerians should not make the mistake of electing Buhari,
whom he said was too old to govern.
“A lot has been said about this election. I want to bring an
aspect to you which is vital. The changing of guards at the
presidential villa is crucial because it is our post 100 years of
co-existence. We must use this election to prove our enemies
wrong. Goodluck Jonathan is our solution to the series of
problems we have in this country. He is well tested and has
risen through the ranks to become a president. Can you say
such a man does not have experience?
“Our product is marketable unlike the other old man who is part
of my generation. He wants to come and rule this nation in this
stage when everyone is moving to endorse younger leaders. We
must support Jonathan to ensure that the old are not allowed to
come back,” Alli further said.
Speaking also, Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed said:
“Jonathan’s government is sincere. When Jonathan came on
board, he came with an agenda and not propaganda. I am not
surprised that ALGON could find Mr. President worthy enough of
endorsing. It was Mr. President that insisted that allocations
meant for local governments get to them directly. That is the
kind of leader we need. Jonathan has intervened in all the
sectors of the economy. The only way to appreciate him is to
vote for him.”
“Everybody is aware that ALGON is a body of elected local
government chairmen on Nigeria. They hold the trust of
grassroot people they represent. The wish of many Nigerians
today is that President Goodluck Jonathan should be returned.
Never in the history of Nigeria has there been a leadership who
is bent on making the life of Nigeria better.
On his part, Minister of Special Duties, Saminu Turaki, said:
“During elections, vote and do not look for any trouble. After
voting, stay with your votes and ensure that you follow them
when they are counting your votes. Do not allow them to rig.
Stay with them and ensure nothing happens to the votes.”
“Even if you want changes, people will want positive changes.
We say to advocates of change that it does not come from
abstract. Even if Jonathan has touched the lives of people, he
can do more. That is why we must return him.

Don’t Repeat Ekiti Rigging Strategy Under Any Guise, APC Warns Jonathan, PDP

Gentlemen, we have additional information to give you on
what has now become Ekitigate. Contrary to the general belief,
it was not just the military that was involved. It was the entire
gamut of the nation’s security agencies: The police, the State
Security Service (SSS) and the Civil Defence. They were all
constituted into a task force that was deployed to each local
government and placed under the command of the PDP. We
have the names of all the servicemen involved in the criminal
act, as well as their service and telephones numbers. On the
morning of the Ekiti election, not one APC leader was a free
man or woman. They were either in detention, in hiding or on
the run, because the task force carried out its duty with brutal
efficiency.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the Jonathan
lead administration and the ruling party, Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) that it should not repeat Ekiti rigging strategy
under any guise.
This was made known, Monday, during a press conference by
the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in
Lagos.
The Statement read thus
As you are very much aware, the final countdown has begun to
the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for
Saturday, March 28th.
As the clock ticks toward the D-Day, we are compelled to alert
Nigerians, local and foreign election observers and indeed the
international community to the strategy being employed by the
PDP-led Jonathan Administration to manipulate the elections,
using what we call the Modified Ekiti Rigging Strategy.
It is no longer news that a Captain in the Nigerian Army, Sagir
Koli, has exposed how the Administration used the military to
rig the Governorship Election in Ekiti on June 21st 2014.
According to Capt. Sagir, soldiers were put at the behest of
designated PDP officials at each of the 16 local governments in
the state to work with the officials to rig the elections.
Once the PDP officials pointed out any APC leader in a
particular local government, such leader was either arrested and
detained or simply hounded into hiding. APC leaders who were
arrested also had the funds in their possession, including
money to pay party agents and for other logistics, confiscated
as they were detained till well after the election.
Gentlemen, we have additional information to give you on what
has now become Ekitigate. Contrary to the general belief, it was
not just the military that was involved. It was the entire gamut
of the nation’s security agencies: The police, the State Security
Service (SSS) and the Civil Defence. They were all constituted
into a task force that was deployed to each local government
and placed under the command of the PDP. We have the names
of all the servicemen involved in the criminal act, as well as
their service and telephones numbers. On the morning of the
Ekiti election, not one APC leader was a free man or woman.
They were either in detention, in hiding or on the run, because
the task force carried out its duty with brutal efficiency.
In view of the global outcry over the Ekiti show of shame, there
is a plan to slightly modify it for Saturday’s election, hence
what we have now termed the Modified Ekiti Rigging Strategy.
Since indications are that the military is no longer willing to be
used for such an illegal act, and other security agencies know
they will be under the searchlight on election days, those who
are averse to a free, fair, credible and violence-free polls have
simply come up with the plan to sew military and police
uniforms for their party thugs to wear on election day so they
can rig the elections for the PDP! A large number of uniformed
personnel on election day will be those donning fake uniforms
and ranks, and their mandate will be to rig for the PDP and
terrorize opposition members and supporters.
They have also mobilized ethnic militias across the country:
MASSOB in the South East; OPC in the South West and ex-
militants in the Niger Delta. Mobilized under the pretext of a 9
billion Naira pipeline contract, the marching order given to the
ethnic militias is to destabilize the election in their respective
regions, thus rendering it inconclusive. After all, the PDP knows
it cannot win a free, fair and peaceful election. The highly
disruptive and armed protest by the OPC in Lagos last Monday
was a dress rehearsal for the plot.
Also, thugs have been trained in several South Western States,
particularly Ondo and Ogun States, to disrupt the coming
elections. In Ondo State, training was organized by the PDP
new leadership in Ilaje/Okitipupa zone. These thugs, numbering
over 300, were given two weeks training in weapons use under
a Commander/President called Miti. They have now been moved
in 12 buses to join the Ogun State Group from where they will
be dispatched to other states in the South West, with arms.
For the Northern part of the country, the plot is to deploy the
Special Forces, who were trained in Belarus, to the liberated
territories in the North East, ostensibly to hold the liberated
territories but in reality to rig the election for the PDP. Also,
Vice President Namadi Sambo has met with security chiefs in
Kaduna with a request that they must deliver 2 million votes to
the PDP anyhow, with promises of mouth-watering incentives
include cash and promotion
Gentlemen, the Inspector-General of Police and the Service
Chiefs are also part of the plot. You will recall the unlawful
warning issued by the IGP urging voters to cast their ballot and
immediately leave the polling units. A similar order is expected
to be issued by the Chief of Army Staff ahead of the election,
and the orders are aimed at harassing and intimidating voters
as well as ensuring they do not stay around to prevent the PDP
rigging plans. We urge Nigerians to ignore such unlawful
directives which are not grounded in the Electoral Act, as
pointed out by the INEC Chairman. Nigerians must not only
vote, they must stay behind to protect their votes. Without
being disruptive, they should use their phone cameras to
document proceedings at the various polling booths, so that no
one will tamper with their votes. All they are required to do is
to conduct themselves peacefully.
We are here to sound the alarm loud and clear: We will not
accept accept a repeat of the Ekiti rigging strategy in any form,
modified or
not. Voters must not be harassed or intimidated and they must
be allowed to defend their votes, as supported by the Electoral
Act. Those who are bent on rigging the elections must know
that Nigeria will be under a global spotlight on election day. No
polling booth, no matter where it is located, will escape that
spotlight.
In this regard, we want to commend the international friends of
our country, Nigeria, in particular the United States and Britain,
for their support in making sure that the forthcoming elections
are free, fair, credible and violence-free. Many of you must have
read the OP-ED page article jointly written by US Secretary of
State John Kerry and British Secretary of State for Foreign
Affairs Phillip Hammond.
We at the APC associate ourselves with that timely article, in
which the authors urged ”all eligible Nigerians to vote, resist
those who attempt to incite violence, and to come together as
one country to defend the country against terrorist threats”.
They went further: ”There are good reasons why the
international spotlight is firmly fixed on Nigeria during this
critical period and why we have come together to support an
open and credible electoral process. Nigeria is Africa’s largest
democracy and what happens there will have an impact well
beyond its borders. A successful election, free from violence
and with wide participation, accurate vote counting, and
responsible leadership from the candidates would inspire the
region and spur future progress and prosperity. It would also be
a historic show of support by
Nigerians for democratic values and an equally firm rejection of
the brutal terrorist group, Boko Haram, and others who
advocate or perpetrate violence.”
We urge all our members and supporters, and indeed all
Nigerians, to show uncommon courage and patriotism by doing
whatever it takes, lawfully, to defend their votes. We urge them
to repudiate those who are planning to foment chaos or rig the
polls.
To those planning to disrupt or rig the elections and instigate
violence, we ask them to heed the warning signals from the
international community, as aptly conveyed by Mr. John Kerry
and Mr Phillip Hammond, that ”any person who incites violence
at any stage in the electoral process, or who seeks power
through unconstitutional means, should be held accountable
and should understand that the consequences will be severe,
both domestically and internationall

Falana Warns Of Military Coup, Says Elections May Not Hold

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has warned that
the March 28 and April 11 elections may be sabotaged by
anti-democratic forces, which could lead the military to stage
a coup d’etat and set in place an interim government.

Mr. Falana, who stated this in a speech delivered at the
Foursquare Gospel Church owned Life Theological Seminary,
Ikorodu, on Sunday, said despite assurances by President
Goodluck Jonathan and the Independent National Electoral
Commission, there was no indication that the election will hold
as billed.
He also warned of the likelihood of post-election violence
should the vote go forward.
Both President Jonathan and the Independent Electoral
Commission chair, Attahiru Jega, have maintained that the new
election dates are sacrosanct.
“There is no indication that the election will hold,” he said. “If
the INEC goes ahead with the conduct of the elections there are
fears that the exercise may be sabotaged by anti-democratic
forces. If the election holds the results may be rejected leading
to a post-election violence which may threaten the corporate
existence of the nation.
“In the circumstance, an interim government may be established
and be saddled with the task of preparing the country for
another political transition. In the alternative, a coup d’etat that
may be staged by the top echelon of the armed forces under the
pretext of restoring law and order and fighting the menace of
insurgency. The military wing of the ruling parties succeeded in
Mali and Burkina Faso. But having divided the country along
ethnic and religious lines, the masterminds of the political
crisis are not likely to profit from the perfidy.”
He therefore, asked Nigerians to prepare “for a long drawn out
battle for the liberation of the country from political and
economic predators”.
In his speech, the lawyer commended the renewed onslaught
against the deadly terror group, Boko Haram, in the North-East
region of Nigeria by both the federal government and the
Nigerian military.
He, however, asked the military to discontinue the court martial
of several solders who had earlier complained about lack of
sophisticated weapons to face the insurgents.
He said the government’s admittance that it purchased new
equipment for the fight to succeed, meant that the soldiers were
justified in the earlier protest.
He also asked the Federal Government to implement the
recommendations of the Ambassador Usman Gilmatiri
presidential panel on insurgency in the north east region and
embark on a special programme to address the problems of
child education and youth unemployment in the region.
On the state of the nation’s economy, Mr. Falana said the bulk
of the intervention funds created by the Goodluck Jonathan-led
administration was for the rich.
According to Mr. Falana, the funds including- Agricultural
Credit Guarantee Scheme (N69billion); Commercial Agricultural
Credit Guarantee Scheme (N200billion); the Nigerian Incentive-
Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending
(N200billion); Small and Medium Enterprises Credit Guarantee
Scheme (N200billion); the SMEs Restructuring and Refinancing
Scheme (N200billion) and Power and Airlines Intervention Fund
(N300billion) are yet to have effect on the economy.
“Sequel to the crash in the price of crude oil the Federal
Government announced that austerity measures would be
imposed on the hapless Nigerian people,” he said. “Because of
the gross mismanagement of the economy by the government
and its allies workers are now salaries for months. After the
elections the people are going to be made to bear the brunt of
the looting of the treasury and costs of running the
government.
“But in spite of the grinding poverty in the land Nigerian
legislators are said to be the highest paid in the world. The
country’s public officers equally receive the highest estacodes
in the world. With over 10 aircraft Nigeria has the largest
presidential fleet among the developing nations in the world.”
The lawyer also accused the Central Bank of Nigeria of
“dollarization of the economy”.
“In a bid to dollarize the economy and destroys the Nigerian
economy the CBN supplies millions of dollars to the foreign
exchange market on a weekly basis,” he said. “Although Nigeria
has become the largest importer of the United States dollars in
the world neither the International Monetary Fund (IMF) nor the
World Bank has ever questioned the reckless devaluation of the
economy. Even, the National Assembly which is debating the
2015 Appropriation Bill has not deemed it to consider the
deleterious effects of the increasing devaluation of the national
currency on the implementation of the Budget.”
The media was also not left out as Mr. Falana accused the
media of diverting attention from Nigeria’s problem of youth
unemployment, infrastructural decay, insecurity, corruption,
currency devaluation to giving undue prominence to the
campaign of calumny and character assassination embarked
upon by some politicians.
“The media have thrown caution to the winds by colluding with
certain politicians to divert attention from the crises of youth
unemployment, infrastructural decay, insecurity, corruption,
currency devaluation etc,” he said. “Thus, by giving undue
prominence to the campaign of calumny and character
assassination embarked upon by some politicians the media
have denied the Nigerian people the opportunity to make
informed decisions on the candidates of their choice.

BREAKING: Court bars use of soldiers in election

.Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, southwest Nigeria,

on Monday, restrained the President Goodluck Jonathan-

led Federal Government from deploying the military to

supervise the coming general elections.

The presiding Judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, in his ruling,

declared that it is unconstitutional to deploy military for the

supervision of election without the approval of the National

Assembly.

Nigerian soldiers on patrol in Maiduguri

The ruling of the court, was sequel to a suit filed by Femi

Gbajabiamila, a member of the House of Representatives

representing Surulere Federal Constituency 2 under the platform

of All Progressives Congress, APC against President Goodluck

Jonathan, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief Of Army Staff, Chief of Air

Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and the Attorney General of the

Federation.

In his argument, Seni Adio, lawyer to the plaintiff, argued that

there was an allegation and evidence that the military inhibited

free movement, free access and intimidation of voters in of

Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra where the military were deployed

during the governorship elections in those states.

In addition, Adio argued further that it is not ideal to deploy the

military to supervise election in a democratic setting.

Consequently, considering what happened in Osun and Ekiti in

2014 and Anambra in November, 2013, he urges the court to

restrain the defendants from using the military in the coming

elections.

Mr. Dele Adeshina, SAN, opposed the application on the ground

that the President being the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed

Forces, is empowered under Armed Forces Act to deploy the

military to maintain law and order.

In his response, Adio said the Armed Forces Act is subordinate

to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Monday’s ruling tallies with that of the Federal High Court in

Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria, which had on Thursday, 29 January,

2015, outlawed the use of the military for election duty across

Nigeria.

The court ruled on the lingering controversy and declared the

use of soldiers as unconstitutional.

Justice Mohammed Rilwan Aikawa ruled that other than for the

purposes of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity, no

constitutional provision allows for the deployment of the

military for elections.

The suit challenging the deployment of military for election

duties was instituted by the Deputy Speaker of the House of

Assembly, Bello Goronyo, representing Goronyo Constituency in

Sokoto State.

Justice Rilwan added that for the Federal Government to do so,

it must have taken recourse to the National Assembly, which

would enact such law.

The presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives

Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari had early in

January warned President Goodluck Jonathan against further

deployment of soldiers to cities and towns during elections.

He said that the soldiers were meant to defend the territorial

integrity of the country and not for policing elections.

Whereas few military men have been deployed to tackle

insurgents in the north east, he said a large number were

deployed to monitor elections.

Also, in its February 16 letter, APC drew Jonathan’s and the

INEC’s attention to the January 29 judgment of Justice R.M.

Aikawa of the Federal High Court, Sokoto and the February 16

decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which outlawed the

President’s unilateral deployment of soldiers for the June 21,

2014 Ekiti State governorship election. It urged them to obey

both decisions.

In the letter signed by the Director, Legal, APC Presidential

Campaign Council, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN), the party

argued that by virtue of both decisions, it had become illegal

for the President and INEC to involve members of the armed

forces in electoral matters without the National Assembly’s

permission.

Justice Aikawa restrained the President and INEC “from

engaging the service of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the

security supervision of elections in any manner whatsoever in

any part of Nigeria, without an Act of the National Assembly.”

Justice Abdul Aboki , in his lead judgment in the Ekiti State

Governorship Election appeal delivered on February 16, held

that “even the President of Nigeria has no powers to call on the

Nigerian Armed Forces and to unleash them on peaceful

citizens, who are exercising their franchise to elect their

leaders.

“Whoever unleashed soldiers on Ekiti State disturbed the peace

of the election on June 21, 2014; acted in flagrant breach of the

Constitution and flouted the provisions of the Electoral Act,

which required an enabling environment by civil authorities in

the conduct of elections.”

Section 215 of the 1999 Constitution makes the maintenance of

internal security, including law and order during elections, the

exclusive responsibility of the police.

According to Lagos lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN), it is

erroneous for Prof Jega to say that only the military could

guarantee security during the elections.

To him, once INEC has discharged its constitutional duty of

fixing election dates, the onus is on the police to provide

security and maintain law and order.

Falana recalled that the courts have consistently enjoined the

Federal Government to desist from involving the armed forces in

elections.

He cited the leading judgment of the Court of Appeal in Yussuf

v Obasanjo (2005) 18 NWLR (PT 956) 96, which the court held:

“It is up to the police to protect our nascent democracy and not

the military, otherwise the democracy might be wittingly or

unwittingly militarized. This is not what the citizenry bargained

for in wrestling power from the military in 1999. Conscious step

or steps should be taken to civilianize the polity to ensure the

survival and sustenance of democracy.”

The court, Falana said, reiterated its views in the case of Buhari

v Obasanjo (2005) 1 WRN 1 at 200 when it stated: “In spite of

the non-tolerant nature and behavior of our political class in

this country, we should by all means try to keep armed

personnel of whatever status or nature from being part and

parcel of our election process. The civilian authorities should

be left to conduct and carry out fully the electoral processes at

all levels.”

Upholding the judgment, the Supreme Court stated in Buhari v

Obasanjo (2005) 50 WRN 1 at 313 that the state is obligated to

ensure that “citizens who are sovereign can exercise their

franchise freely, unmolested and undisturbed.”

Falana said going by the verdicts, Prof Jega should ensure that

INEC is not further blackmailed by the military hierarchy.

“On their own part, the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the

Service Chiefs should desist from usurping the constitutional

responsibility of the INEC and the Nigeria Police Force,” Falana

added.

How President Jonathan’s Airport shuttles weaken Abuja security, endanger residents

On Saturday, March 21, President Goodluck
Jonathan and his campaign team flew out of
Abuja in two aircrafts for another round of
vote solicitation in Kano and neighbouring
Katsina ahead of the March 28 national
elections.
Four hours before the President left his
home at the Presidential villa that Saturday,
over 200 police officers and about a hundred
soldiers were withdrawn from their beats
around the nation’s capital and made to line
the about 40 kilometres route to the Nnamdi
Azikiwe International Airport, some standing
with their rifles on their shoulders, some
sitting on pavements, stones and bare
ground and others snoring away in patrol
cars.
The police wouldn’t say how many officers
are deployed daily to patrol and secure
Abuja, but residents believe the nation’s
capital is under-policed, with some saying
they have never seen a police officer patrol
their areas.
Yet, that Saturday, hundreds of officers, who
could have patrolled streets to check crimes
were mandated to line Mr. Jonathan’s route
for hours, a practice security experts believe
routinely compromises the capital’s security
and exposes residents to robbery,
abductions, rape, assaults and other criminal
acts.
A team of PREMIUM TIMES reporters, who
monitored the president’s airport shuttle
that Saturday, found that nearly all the patrol
vehicles attached to the city’s police
divisions and major intersections in the
capital were withdrawn and used in
transporting officers to locations along the
major expressway from the State House to
the presidential wing of the airport.
The team counted at least 40 police patrol
vehicles parked along the expressway from
the Bolingo Hotel junction up to the
Presidential wing entrance of the Airport.
Each vehicle had at least five well armed
police officers.
That was aside the numerous other police
officers stationed along the route, without
vehicles by their side.
The team’s conservative estimate suggested
that at least 200 police officers were
withdrawn from the city centre to guard the
expressway that day.
Presidency insiders say that practice is
routine, and that there is no plan to review
it.
Apart from the policemen, the reporters also
saw troops from the Guard Brigade in some
strategic locations along the route, especially
by the several suburb localities.
“We saw at least one armoured personnel
carrier with some soldiers near the
intersection leading to Kuje Area Council
before the Airport gate,” one reporter said.
Analysts believe it costs Nigeria several
millions  of naira whenever the President
shuttles to airports.
The numerous vehicles lining the
expressway and the ones on the president’s
convoy would have to be fueled, while the
police officers on guard duty along the route
are paid allowances,” a security official
familiar with the working of the presidential
villa told PREMIUM TIMES. “Presidential
movements are expensive and that is one
thing Nigerians must learn to live with.”
A resident of one pf the estates along the
Abuja Airport expressway, Emmanuel Ogala,
said the security official deployed to guard
the president’s routes at times molest
innocent civilians.
“The roads are closed for like 30 minutes
before the President passes, God help you if
you have an emergency and the president is
traveling,” he said.
Between the President’s travels and
compromised security
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos
recently blamed the president when armed
robbers attacked residents of Lekki Peninsula
on March 12, killing six.
Mr. Fashola said police officers who would
have helped in repelling the bank robbery
were deployed to protect Mr. Jonathan when
he visited the state that day, an argument the
presidency described as unintelligent and
irresponsible.
“Perhaps what would be would have been,
but it’s sad to see all our security personnel,
all our security vehicles deployed to protect
one man,” said Mr. Fashola, who spoke at an
event, An Evening with Buhari and Osinbajo,
in Lagos.
“All the vehicles we bought for the police
were stationed to receive the President in
Lagos. Those policemen have children and
tonight their mothers will have to explain to
them why daddy is not coming home.”
The presidency however described Mr.
Fashola’s statement as “grossly and utterly
irresponsible.”
“We expect that a man of his status, who is
the Governor of a state should speak more
responsibly,” the presidency said in the
statement.
“It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever that
the entire police formation in a state would
be deployed to protect the president of
Nigeria.
“The visit of the President (to) any part of
the country does not necessitate the
depletion of the police force active in that
particular state or its environment.

South Africa Performs World’s First Successful Penis Transplant

The world’s first successful penis transplant was recently
performed at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.
This pioneering operation restored the dignity of a 21-year-old
man who lost his penis when it developed gangrene after a
ritual circumcision, and it has probably also given him back the
ability to father his own children naturally – something doctors
hint he has been trying out for more than a month. “The patient
is very happy and he’s doing well,” says Prof André van der
Merwe, head of Stellenbosch University’s Division of Urology,
who led the surgery. In a marathon nine-hour operation,
doctors surgically transplanted the entire penis (from the glans
to the base) from an organ donor. The patient’s own penis had
to be amputated three years ago in order to save his life,
leaving him with a stump no longer than 1.5cm after which he
was unable to urinate standing up or have sexual intercourse.
The patient has made a full recovery from the transplant, which
took place three months ago. He is able to obtain erections,
urinate standing up and has regained sensation in the organ.
This is the second time that this type of procedure was
attempted, but the first time in history that a successful long-
term result was achieved.
“There is a greater need in South Africa for this type of
procedure than elsewhere in the world, as many young men
lose their penises every year due to complications from ritual
circumcision,” Van der Merwe told Health-e News.
“For a young man of 18 or 19 years the loss of penis can be
deeply traumatic… there are even reports of suicide among
these young men”
Although there are no formal record on the number of penile
amputations per year due to ritual circumcision, one study
reported up to 55 cases in the Eastern Cape alone, and experts
estimate as many as 250 amputations per year across the
country.
“This is a very serious situation. For a young man of 18 or 19
years the loss of penis can be deeply traumatic. He doesn’t
necessarily have the psychological capability to process this.
There are even reports of suicide among these young men,”
says Van der Merwe. The operation was part of a pilot study to
develop a penile transplant procedure that could be performed
in a typical South African hospital theatre setting.
“The research was conducted in partnership with local public
health structures and will be delivered to the people who need
it most,” says Dr Nicola Barsdorf, head of Health Research
Ethics at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and
Health Sciences (FMHS). “Once the surgery is made broadly
available it will be offered in state facilities and accessible to
vulnerable groups that are often unable to afford state-of-the-
art health care.”
Nine more patients will receive penile transplants as part of the
study. This procedure could eventually also be extended to men
who have lost their penises from cancer or as a last-resort
treatment for severe erectile dysfunction due to medication side
effects. The planning and preparation for the study started in
2010. After extensive research Van der Merwe and his surgical
team decided to use some parts of the model and techniques
developed for the first facial transplant. The surgeons
connected blood vessels and nerves as small as 1mm to 2mm
using microsurgery usually employed in plastic and
reconstructive surgery.
“South Africa remains at the forefront of medical progress,” says
Prof Jimmy Volmink, FMHS Dean. “This procedure is another
excellent example of how medical research, technical know-
how and patient-centred care can be combined in the quest to
relieve human suffering.

Nigeria claim 7th U20 title

A jaw-dropping moment of quality from Bernard Bulbwa settled
a fiercely-contested 2015 Africa U20 football championship final
between Nigeria and Senegal on Sunday as the Flying Eagles
claimed their 7th under-20 title with a 1-0 victory.
The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and almost got
the first goal on six minutes but Joshua Enaholo’s great
reflexes denied Malick Niang after a flowing Senegalese move.
Senegal were all over Nigeria in the opening moments of the
game and almost scored the opener in the 12th minute but
Enaholo was outstanding again, this time denying Niang a sure
goal with an unconventional stop with his feet from point blank
range.
Three minutes later, the hosts came close again through El
Malick Niang whose header just flew off target.
The home fans were bouncing in the stands as the Young
Teranga Lions looked to exact revenge on the Flying Eagles
following their 1-3 defeat to the Nigerians in the opening game
of the competition. On19 minutes, Bernard Bulbwa silenced the home support with
a goal worthy of winning any game.
The forward took a long pass with the outside of his right foot
before hitting an unstoppable volley beyond the reach of a
shell-shocked Senegalese goalkeeper.
The two sides traded excellent opportunities all throughout the
game but the Flying Eagles held out for a famous win.
Nigeria will now compete in Group E of the 2015 Fifa under-20
World Cup alongside Brazil, North Korea and Hungary.
The World Cup begins in New Zealand on May 30 and runs till
June 20.

capacity microSD card available for use in mobile devices.
Currently, the highest capacity microSD slot on a phone is the
128GB available on devices like the HTC One (M8), LG G3 and
theSamsung Galaxy S5.
Even some entry-level devices like the Microsoft Lumia 535
feature a 128GB capacity slot.
SanDisk was able to create the 200GB card by taking the
technology it used for the 128GB microSD card and revised the
design and production method to fit more bits per die.
At a transfer rate of 90Mbps, consumers can transfer 1200
photos in a minute.
SanDisk VP Christopher Chute notes in a statement that 70% of
images captured by consumers are now done on a smartphone
or tablet.
By 2019, that figure will be as high as 90% and consumers will
be looking for additional storage space. And that is where
SanDisk comes in.
The 200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, Premium
Edition will launch in the second quarter, priced at $399.99
(N80,000).
It comes with a ten year warranty. The card will store up to 20
hours of FHD video.
Each card is waterproof, X-ray proof, magnet proof and
temperature proof which means that your memories will survive
just about anything.
My Question now is, will any Nigerian be so stupid to go and
buy the new 200GB memorycard for N80,000 ???
Why not buy an External Hard Drive of 1 or 2 Terabyte and copy
whatever you wanna copy, rather than buying a single small
200GB memorycard with such an amount.
What if the memorycard get lost, how do you explain the story
to someone or how do you start looking for it...

Controversy As Allegations Of “Shady Deals” Rock Nigeria Election Debate Group

Controversy As Allegations Of “Shady

Deals” Rock Nigeria Election Debate Group

But there have been allegations that the group is actually a

one-man show run by Raymond Dokpesi, the Chairman of

DAAR Communications Limited (owners of Africa Independent

Television, AIT), who uses it as a bargaining tool for private

gains and political advantage. The Nigeria Election Debate Group, NEDG, has organised
presidential and vice presidential debates since 1999, but fresh
claims have emerged questioning the independence and
partisan nature of the group.
The debates, the final lap of the series of debates organised by
the NEDG, is holding on March 22, according to the organisers.
But there have been allegations that the group is actually a
one-man show run by Raymond Dokpesi, the Chairman of DAAR
Communications Limited (owners of Africa Independent
Television, AIT), who uses it as a bargaining tool for private
gains and political advantage.
When it was incorporated in 2011, the NEDG listed six
organisations as shareholders, each with a representative.
They include Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON,
represented by Abubakar Aji; DAAR Communications,
represented by Tony Akiotu; Nigeria Union of Journalists,
represented by Mohammed Garba; Alliance for Credible Election
represented by Emma Ezeazu; Nigeria Guild of Editors,
represented by Gbenga Adefaye; and Transition Monitoring
Group, TMG, represented by Moshood Erubami.
At a press conference on Friday in Lagos, a pressure group,
Value and Integrity Group, accused Mr. Dokpesi of having
turned the NEDG into a private estate put at the service of
President Goodluck Jonathan and his Peoples Democratic Party.
“Our investigation reveals as follows: First, a First Bank account
was opened for the NEDG and had Dr. Dokpesi as the sole
signatory, though he is not listed as one of the Directors,” the
group said in a statement signed by Sina Odugbemi and
Popoola Ajayi, Coordinator and Secretary respectively.
“He also used the DAAR communications office address, a
personal address as the address listed in the bank account
documentation. These two moves effectively turned the NEDG
into Dokpesi’s private company.”
According to the group, an initial N1 million was paid into the
said NEDG account, and on March 28th, 2011, another N20
million was paid into his (Mr. Dokpesi’s) personal account.
“The N20m was paid into his personal current account number
2017171535 because the NEDG account opening was in process
then hence he received the N20m in his personal current
account instead of NEDG,” the group said.
“A text message from Dokpesi to the banker confirms this. The
text message reads – ‘He sent about N20 million to the
account since last week and I utilised about N50 million for the
NEDG DEBATE. As soon as the sponsors pay, I will pay in.daar'”
The group, brandishing copies of Mr. Dokpesi’s bank account
opening documents and NEDG’s certificate of registration at the
Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), also said that Mr. Dokpesi
tried to open another First Bank account in 2012.
“The First Bank account was opened by Dokpesi at the Maitama
branch of the First Bank in Abuja with account number
2021069251 with Chief Raymond Dokpesi as sole signatory to
the account with the help of his aide banker.
“The second account which Dokpesi equally instructed the
banker to open in the Bwari branch of the First bank is pending
to be opened because the banker left. However, before then,
Dokpesi in fact signed the application forms, attached his
passport photos entered his personal details in 2012. The
account was yet to be approved before one of the manager
handling it was eased out of the bank.”
‘Sole organiser’
The NEDG began organising election presidential debates in
1999 and describes itself as a coalition of broadcast
organisations, civil societies and professional groups
committed to entrenching enduring democratic cultures through
organised television debates.
“The Nigerian Elections Debate Group has since transformed
into a broad based non-partisan, non-profit making
organisation with the primary mandate of organising and
hosting live televised debates for all Presidential, Vice
Presidential and Gubernatorial candidates in Nigeria,” the NEDG
stated on its website.
But in their press briefing on Friday, the Value and Integrity
Group described the NEDG as the non-profit wing of DAAR
Communications, available to do the bidding of the ruling party
and which had kept other NEDG directors in the dark about
their financial transactions.
“An Organisation on the board of the Group, Transition
Monitoring Group (TMG), had last year dissociated itself from
the planned Presidential debate. TMG accused the organisers of
the debate of fraudulently using its name in the promotion of
the event and warned NEDG to desist from such shenanigan
forthwith.
“Chief Dokpesi’s name does not reflect in the NEDG registration
documents from the CAC only that of DAAR representative, Tony
Akiotu. But Chief Dokpesi has opened the account in his name
and went ahead to single handedly organise the 2011 election
debate with AIT staff – Imoni Amarere and Nancy Ilo as
moderators.
“Again, he is accused to be the sole organiser of the 2015
presidential election debate for the NEDG which has generated
unpleasant credibility crisis for the NEDG.
“It is alleged that for the 2015 debate, well over 250 million has
been paid to the organisers by the Presidency.
“Unfortunately, the refusal of the leading opposition to attend
the integrity deficit presidential debate, AIT has chosen to
unprofessionally attack and even defame both the candidate
and the party.”
In January, the All Progressives Congress said it would not
participate in the presidential debate organised by the NEDG,
accusing the organisers of bias and “wearing the toga of
government control, especially being composed mainly of
agencies and allies of the incumbent PDP administration”.
The parties involved
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted Mr. Erubami, who was the
Chairman of TMG when NEDG was incorporated, he said issues
like that did not arise during his time at the helm of the civil
society organisation.
“I only know to the extent of the time I was chairman of
Transition Monitoring Group, but I have completed my time and
I’m now at Ibadan, I don’t know anything about the group
again,” Mr. Erubami said.
“If you want to confirm the veracity of what has happened you
can contact the current chairman in Abuja.”
Ibrahim Zikirullahi, the current Chairman of TMG, was more
forceful in his response, accusing the NEDG of lacking integrity
and being involved in ‘shady deals.'”
“While I cannot authoritatively say whether Dokpesi is the only
sole signatory, I will also say that the claims (of the Value and
Integrity Group) are not far from the fact,” Mr. Zikirullahi said.
“I became chairman of Transition Monitoring Group in July
2012, till date, nobody informed me that TMG is a member of the
Nigeria Election Debate Group, neither my predecessor nor
those that are holding fort at the Nigeria Election Debate Group.
“Between 2012 and now, there was no meeting that was called
upon which to deliberate on any issue regarding Nigeria
Election Debate Group until now when I saw our name being
floated in the media that we are one of the organisers of the
presidential debate.”
Mr. Zikirullahi accused the NEDG of using TMG’s name to send
out proposals to foreign donors seeking support for the
presidential debate.
“So as far as I’m concerned, I don’t know anything about the
debate. No phone call has been made to me or to any of my
officers, no written invitation, and there is no meeting between
us in which we agree on the mode and scope of the debate,” he
said.
“So for me I cannot allow them to be using our corporate
identity. It was on that strength that I wrote to them asking
them to stop forthwith using our corporate identity.”
Mr. Zikirullahi said that he had it “in good record” that the
NEDG had already collected billions of naira from a political
party.
He declined to name the party.
“Yet, to make it credible they are just sending out proposals to
donor agencies, and those donor agencies we have a very good
relationship with them. And before they do anything that they
see our name they need to verify from us.
“And it was on that stretch we got to know the extent to which
they have gone to. If not they should mention the source of
their funding,” said Mr. Zikirullahi.
“A lot of shady things they are doing that is not known to the
public, and I said under my regime we cannot be part of that
hidden agenda. It’s better they come out open let us know the
direction they are going, let us know the source of their
funding?
“Who is running the secretariat? How is the board being
appointed? From 2011 till now there is no meeting that has
been called. So it’s just a one man show, I can agree
especially, it is a product of AIT and Dokpesi and so for us you
have to count us out at any time we are not part of it.”
‘It’s not true’
Eddie Emessiri, NEDG’s Executive Secretary, dismissed all the
claims, accusing Mr. Zikirullahi of dabbling into partisan
politics.
“High Chief Raymond Dokpesi has no hand (in NEDG), or let me
put it better, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi was even the founder
of this whole thing because he started election debate in 1999,”
Mr. Emessiri said.
“By the time NEDG was formed, a group of organisations now
decided to get this thing over, and he handed the management
over to Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON.”
Mr. Emessiri explained that the chairman of BON at any
particular time was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the
NEDG.
According to him, the headship of BON is rotated between the
three federal government-owned media of Nigeria Television
Authority, NTA; Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN; and
Voice of Nigeria, VON.
The current head of NEDG, Sola Omale, is the Director-General
of NTA.
Before him were Taiwo Alimi of VON and Abubakar Jijiwa of
FRCN.
“The only thing Raymond Dokpesi does, or used to do, or even
now is simply we contact him and tell him please we need
airtime, we want to do this, and he’ll just give his final
approval, ask his Group General Manager, Tony Akiotu, to give
us every support that we require,” said Mr. Emessiri.
“And that is why they have given us airtime to carry everything,
all their stations anywhere they are we want to advertise
anything. And they are the hub of the production.
“Raymond Dokpesi does not even attend our meetings. How
then can they say Raymond Dokpesi is the person who directs
NEDG.”
Mr. Emessiri denied claims that Mr. Dokpesi was a signatory to
NEDG’s bank account.
“I am the Executive Secretary of the organisation, I manage the
bank account and the bank account is Zenith bank. Come to
Zenith Bank, Area 7, Abuja, and find out. That is the only
account that we have,” he said.
“The First Bank account was the account that they ran many
many years ago and we don’t use that anymore. It was at the
very beginning when Raymond Dokpesi founded the
organisation, even before 2003. We never used that in 2007, we
never used that in 2011, not to talk of now.
“We moved over to Zenith Bank when the chairmanship of the
organisation went to VON. And VON also has account in Zenith
bank, that particular branch.”
Mr. Emessiri insisted that the NEDG had been having meetings,
adding that TMG was part of the group but he doesn’t know
“what got into the head” of Mr. Zikirullahi, its current chairman.
“He didn’t look through the books he had to know that the
former chairmen of TMG were full time members of NEDG and
present in every of our meetings. This man has taken over,
because he has a bent on politics he started criticising.”
PREMIUM TIMES also contacted Mr. Dokpesi, who vehemently
denied all the claims, particularly the allegation that he
collected billions from a political party on behalf of NEDG.
“Which politician ever gave me money? Which politician ever
gave me money?” he asked.
When told that some newspapers had already run the story on
how he was using the NEDG as a private estate, Mr. Dokpesi
said he had not seen the publication yet.
“I’m in Edo North at this point in time. Election is next week,
I’m busy in my senatorial district so I do not know what you are
talking about,” Mr. Dokpesi said.
“But you say there is a publication, they can publish anything
they want. Before they invited you to a press conference I’m
sure they already had what their considerations are.
“NEDG is a group that started the debate in 1999. DAAR
Communications and I have always wanted a debate in Nigeria
since 1999. Almost single-handedly, it is part of our budget.
“In 1999 when we held the debate in Lagos all the media people
(that) are existing how did they contribute? When we held in
2003 was it not the same DAAR Communications that funded it?
When they held in 2007 was it not DAAR Communications that
supported It? When they did in 2007, did they not see It?
“Why is this one the particular one that is now an issue?”
Asked if he carried other board members along in NEDG’s
activities, Mr. Dokpesi responded, “What do you mean whether I
carry? Who do I have to carry? Mr. Gentleman, understand that
there is a chairman, NEDG, in the person of Aremu Taiwo Alimi.
There is a chairman Board of Trustees of the NEDG, that was
Jijiwa but it’s now DG of NTA. They have their Board of
Trustees, what is my role in It?
“I have no problem. I know that…. Who are these Integrity
Group? Who are they made up?
Mr. Dokpesi also denied the claims that he single-handedly ran
the account of the NEDG.
“So why don’t you find out, they have an Executive Secretary of
NEDG, whether I know anything about the account?
“I have no apologies. I can understand. I’ve told you I’m in Edo
north at this present time.
“Whatever is the issue it is good, if the fear of Raymond
Dokpesi is the beginning of wisdom now, may God Almighty
help Nigeria.”
